Mac Compatibility + Downloadable Build
Alright, my dudes, we got mad progress on Frogstool! it's finally running on Mac! For real, this was a pain in the ass, but it’s working, and I’m hyped.
Making Frogstool Run on Mac
So, originally, Frog Stool was only playing nice with Windows. Super cool for, like, half the people who wanna play it. But obviously, I needed it running on Mac too. The biggest issue was dealing with how different Mac handles game files and permissions. MacOS doesn’t like running unsigned apps, and the security settings were throwing a fit when trying to run the game. After wrestling with code signing and making sure all the dependencies played nice, I got it booting up properly.
I also had to swap out some Windows-specific functions that weren’t jiving with Mac. Honestly, I don’t even wanna think about how many times I had to rebuild and test before everything actually worked, but hey- progress.
Downloadable Builds for Mac & Windows
With that sorted, I figured it was time to make Frogstool downloadable. Web builds are cool and all, but nothing beats having a solid, standalone version that runs without a browser slowing it down. So, I put together proper builds for both Mac and Windows.
For Windows, that was straightforward- package everything up, make sure it runs smooth, and boom. But Mac? Not only did I have to package it right, but I also had to make sure the .app bundle was structured correctly so MacOS wouldn’t freak out. Ended up zipping it up for easier distribution because, again, Mac security stuff can be a headache.
But it’s all done! You can now download Frogstool and play it natively on both Mac and Windows. No janky workarounds, no weird errors- just straight-up frogstool awesome-ville wild-town action.
What’s Next?
Now that Frog Stool is running smoothly across the board, the next big step is getting it released on Steam. That means setting up the Steam page, making sure all the build requirements are met, and adding some fun Steam achievements. Gotta make it extra rewarding for those who wanna 100% the game!
And looking further ahead? A mobile version might be in the cards. Apple is kinda spency but seeing Frogstool run on a phone would stinkin rule. I'd also love to create some kind of board game spin off as well some day! Maybe Frogstool 2? who knows.
If you’re on Mac or Windows, go grab it and let me know what you think!
